Gerhard Richter Landscapes

« I see countless landscapes, photograph barely 1 in a 100.000, and paint barely 1 in 100 of those that I photograph. I am seeking something quite specific ». Gerhard Richter.

Gerhard Richter, internationally renowned as a painter, has always had a particular interest in landscape - no other motif has fascinated him to the same extent nor has occupied him over such a long period. Black and white townscapes based on newspaper pictures and amateur photos, mountain scenes and parks with hard, textured surfaces, illusionistic, translucent seascapes in the subtlest of tones, landscapes that seem to dissolve before one's eyes or which are reworked with coloured layers of abstract over-painting. The softly overpainted Views of Corsica from 1968/1969 established the landscapes as an indépendant group of works within Richter's oeuvre - to which he has repeatedly returned ever since.

This volume presents landscapes by Gerhard Richter spanning 35 years: outstanding, large-format reproductions and two major essays elucidate the artist's working methods and his « philosophy » - at the same time demonstrating that Richter's landscapes and abstract works, far from being artistic opposites, are closely related aspects of this painter's unique appropriation of reality.
