This issue investigates the urban spaces where the flux of life eddies, people encounter each other and social activities take place - where society converges. These range from small spaces in tiny settlements, where the populace still gathers in the square, to city spaces of a much greater size where the square can have a multiplicity of different uses. It takes in the transformation of old spaces into new squares.

In order to cover the different situations that the modern city offers us, we have classified the projects carried out into interventions in historic centres (or well-established neighbourhoods) where we will find projects of limited dimensions, heavily influenced by historic buildings and predominantly using hard materials (piazza nera, piazza bianca in Giussano or the Place d'Armes in Namur); and interventions in peripheral areas, where the dimensions are greater, vegetation gains prominence and there are new elements of composition such as freer geometries or diverse materials (Plaza Pallars in Cornellá or the Praça Largo da Devessa in Castelo Branco). We have also included two projects in a special section, ‘courtyard-squares', spaces that are halfway between the two concepts, but worthy of mention in this issue due to their great interest and their attempts to create spaces of connection (Kulturgarten in Berlin).
