James Frazer Stirling

Le CCA et le Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) coorganisent la première exposition d'œuvres tirées du fonds James Stirling/Michael Wilford. James Stirling (1924-1992), architecte britannique et lauréat du prix Pritzker, est une figure importante du design au vingtième siècle. L'exposition Notes from the Archive: James Frazer Stirling, Architect and Teacher, dont la première a lieu au YCBA en octobre 2010, est présentée au CCA en 2012.
Le fonds James Stirling/Michael Wilford du CCA comprend approximativement 40 000 dessins et modèles, 103 mètres linéaires de documents et près de 18 mètres linéaires de documents photographiques. Il couvre la carrière de Stirling à partir de 1948, alors qu'il était étudiant, jusqu'aux projets sur lesquels il a travaillé avant sa mort en 1992 en passant par ses partenariats avec James Gowan et Michael Wilford. Notes from the Archive met en vedette plus de trois cents dessins architecturaux, modèles et photographies originaux tirés du fonds du CCA. Ces œuvres montrent la façon de penser de Stirling sous un jour nouveau.

L'exposition est accompagnée d'une publication écrite par le curateur de l'exposition Anthony Vidler, doyen et professeur à l'école d'architecture Irwin S. Chanin de la Cooper Union. Le livre, intitulé James Frazer Stirling: Notes from the Archive, est publié par le YCBA et le CCA, en association avec les presses universitaires de Yale, et interprète le fonds James Stirling/Michael Wilford situé au CCA.

The British architect James Frazer Stirling (1924-1992) stimulated impassioned responses among both supporters and detractors, and he continues to be the subject of fierce debate. He earned international renown through such innovative and frequently controversial projects as the Leicester University Engineering building (1959-63); the History Faculty building at Cambridge University (1964-67); the Neue Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (1977-84); the Clore Gallery at Tate Britain (1984); and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University (1979-84). Stirling was also a visiting professor at the Yale School of Architecture where he trained and influenced many of the current leaders in the field. Fully illustrated with previously unpublished documents and new photography from the James Stirling/Michael Wilford Archive at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, this book allows for a close examination of design drawings, photographs, and models spanning Stirling's entire career. These materials deepen our understanding of the influences, early formation, approach, and process of an architect whose work resists labelling. Filled with in-depth analytical and critical presentations of exemplary projects and their reception, the volume reveals Stirling to be a remarkably informed and consistent thinker and writer on architecture.
