Included on the World Heritage List in 1995, the historic quarter of the city of Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay) is a crossroads, a meeting point and a synthesis of different cultures. The walls and urban settlement built on the short peninsula jutting into the River Plata's peaceful landscape reflect the will to clearly mark the frontier between the two empires that shared the world in the seventeenth century - the Spanish and the Portuguese.
