Recent developments in South American regional architectural practice have been rapid and widespread. C3 dedicates this issue to a survey of two particular success stories, namely the activities of the School of Architecture at the University of Talca in Chile, and the extensive and somewhat miraculous urban re-development of Colombian city of Medellin. The first examines the results of 14 refreshing, experimental workshops, which have embraced the use of basic or recycled local materials to construct simple yet functional structures and buildings. The second surveys 10 noteworthy buildings and projects, designed by different architects, and that have been integral to the successful reception of the project. Both sections are introduced by writings and interviews, while all works are accompanied by photographs and technical drawings.
